For those of you who have followed my blog on my Dad, he had Alzheimers, I ended up having to help take care of him for a few years before his recent death, before he died we applied for VA benefits, which he was entitled to for over 20 years but he never signed up for…(sigh).
It was a pain in the behind but we got him signed up and then it took almost 1 FULL YEAR before he got his first benefit check, by that time I had to take out 2 personal loans to keep him in his assisted living facility.
So they do retro so the first check was over $15k of course they sent it wrong so I had to send it back and wait for a reissue, which took almost another month!
So we were getting his assisted living checks monthly, he passed in April, so I used his April check to pay for his funeral since there wasn’t any other money, I sent the May check back to the VA with his death certificate.
So what happens?? They send me a BILL for the last two months of benefits!!! Hello, so I called and sent them a letter and they finally credited me for the May check which I sent back but they want the April money back.
ACCORDING TO THE VA OFFICE YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO THE BENEFIT CHECK IN THE MONTH THE VET DIES??
Uh, hello, what do you think their expenses just dissapear? So I owe them $1644 well I think they will have to wait about a year for their money, kinda like me and my dad had to wait for his money.
I spent it all on the funeral where do they expect me to get it from? I can’t believe they don’t allow you that final month. What a CROCK!
